Eat, sik, comer, mangiare 2 - Piri Piri Starfish!!

BJJ (Brazilian Jujitsu) - 2

有一次我打左好多個前同後關斗後, 暈暈地仲有d想嘔, instructor見到走左入洗手間一輪, 我出來之後, 佢就問我: "Anita, are you ok?", 我話 :"No, I'm not ok.  I feel so dizzy and I wanna throw up becoz there's not enough fresh air here.".

Ok, let me try to describe it again in English...

I have done Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) for more than a month now.  From the beginning when my legs would be totally sore for four days (from Monday night after the training to usually Thursday) after the class, to now that I have got more used to the exercise and I have less muscular pain each time afterwards.  I think there's at least some improvement!!

This week I have been challenging myself, becoz I am trying to do BJJ from once a week (Monday night only) to twice a week (adding Wednesday night) as well.  The result of going to BJJ twice a week is -- I'm dead tired after the exercise and the first thing I wanna do is -- to go straight to bed when I got home!!!

I think the most horrible thing  from doing BJJ at my gym is that they DON'T switch on the air-conditioner!!!  I'm dead hot each time doing BJJ there.  My sweat simply stream over my face, over the body!  Each one of the us is the same, without exception.  Once I asked the instructor if he could switch on the air-conditioner becoz it's really damn hot but he said, "No.".  Mamma mia!!  No air-con plus there's no window in the gym, so there's simply no fresh air at all in an hour's practice.  I know why, actually, becoz they want us to sweat and get used to the heat and so on, I guess.

Once I felt really bad after doing some forward and backward sommersaults, and I had to calm down myself in the toilet. When I came out of the toilet, my instructor asked if I was fine, and I said, "No, I'm not ok.  I feel dizzy and I wanna throw up becoz there's not enough fresh air here." Finally, he agreed to switch on the air-con, but there's only 15 mins left before the class was dismissed.  [How come all the others are so strong and they're so energetic EXCEPT me?]

It's hard and tough doing BJJ and honestly I have thought about giving it up before, but no, I try not to.  I want to be more persistent, and not easily giving up things.  After all, this is a really good sport and it trains me to be tough and strong.  Besides sweating mad which is good for my health, it also allows me the time to throw away worries and unhappiness and concentrate myself into doing something.  Well, it teaches me some good self-defense skills too (although I always say that when a woman is confronted by a man, the best strategy is to scream and run away as quickly as possible becoz we shall never think we can beat a man.  It's physically very hard to do so).

Below is a video clip that demonstrates one of the techniques that I learned last night in class.  I laid down and did 10 times from the left, 10 times from the right; and then my partner and I switched position and did once again.  Damn tired but good fun.

Turkeys all come from the country of Peru'!!

jardim (=garden) --- masculine noun

caminho (=path) --- masculine noun

flor (=flower) --- feminine noun

arvore (=tree) --- feminine noun

relva (=grass) --- feminine noun

為左容易記低究竟邊個字係masculine, 邊個係feminine, 我就諗:

jardim (garden) / caminho (path) ----> 佢地係 masculine (男性 nouns), 因為佢地要女人 (feminine nouns)去行先至得;

Forca, forca!!!!

唔知多唔多人有興趣或者係讀緊葡萄牙文呢?  希望有機會交流下!

精彩的英語...

雖然由細讀英文讀到大, 但因為英文唔係第一語言;

雖然工作環境以英文為主, 但香港始終係廣東話天地, 要學好英文都只有靠多睇、多聽、多用, 先發覺有乜唔識, 然後去查同埋嘗試找尋答案。

近日讀報閱到一個專欄, 係古德明先生嘅 "古德明 - 征服英語", 閱後就更加發覺自己英文好差, 因為竟然唔知道以下一句話嘅真正意思......

"It has been four years since I smoked."

我初頭會以為大約意思會係, "我從開始吸煙計, 已經四年了。", 點知根據古先生解釋, 原來真正意思應該係: 我至今有四年沒吸煙了。"!

咁呢句呢?----- "It has been ten years since they married."

古先生再舉例話, 如 "It has been three years since he died.", 意係: 他去世至今三個月了。他三個月前去世, 其後三個月他沒有再死一次, 但死亡嘅狀態並冇改變。

咁如果想話 : "他們離婚至今有十年了" 要點講呢?  係: It has been ten years since they dirvorced.

英文 - 話易唔易, 我真係要睇多d書, 閱讀多d, 進修改善多d先得喇......多謝古德明先生呢篇精采嘅文章, 我有收起來保存。

說話的力量 - The Power of Words

*****

Ok, let me try to repeat what I have said above in English...

A good friend of mine was recently forced to leave her company.  The words that her boss said to her were really disappointing.  That reminds me once again the super power of words.

We can never underestimate how powerful words are and the possible tremendous damaging effects that they can cause to the listeners, no matter how useful and meaningful you think those words could be to the listeners.

I'm not sure if you have been so lucky as to have met people who often say words without carefully considering the situation and the effects on others. There are some people who always like to give comments so sharp and sensational that I don't want to talk to them at all.  I mean - their words could be full of meanings and good for the listeners, but these people lack or simply have no skills in speaking.  They don't realize (or probably they don't even care too much) about speaking skills and techniques.  Plus, they never consider the real situations.

If you were the listener, how would you feel about it when you were said the following things?

1) In a gathering dinner at a Chinese restaurant organized by me, all the old classmates (about 12 of them altogether) sat together at a big round table.  Everyone was happily chatting with each other, updating their news and sharing things.  Afterall, we hadn't met for almost a year and everyone was excited to see each other again.  Towards the end of the gathering, the guy (let's called him "A") who was sitting next to me talked across to another guy (called him "B") who was sitting right opposite at the big table. Guess what A said to B in front of all the people at the big table?  A: "Wow B, you have got so fat now!  You seem to be getting fatter and fatter!  You really have to start losing weights quickly!" Shit!  What the hell is this A doing?  He must be mad.  And imagine how I would feel as well (as I was the organizer of this function)?

2) Once I was scolded on the phone by a client at work (for some very minor issues).  The guy on the phone told me never to phone him again. After the phone call, I was really depressed and I wept.  I told this story to this friend A (the same person as in the Number One issue above).  Guess what he said in response?  Excellent! He said, "Your supervisor is your friend and he nevers scolds at you.  You both are very lazy at work and you don't have much pressure from work!..... You haven't worked much in other companies and you don't know what's outside in this world...) bla bla bla.. and then continued, "Most people in this working world is like this.  You haven't met many people in this world and you can't take blames from others.... you won't be able to work in a company like mine - everyone is like this, you surely can't take any blame. I'm sure you would quit the job after working for a few days if you were working in my company.....".  Sorry excuse me but at the time when he said this to me, I really wanted to tell him to fuxk off!  When I was very depressed and I thought I wanted to share my sad feelings with someone but I was treated this way, what else could I say?  Not a single word of consolation but full of "teachings" and indifferent words.  Imagine a person was so upset and was trying to jump off a building to end his/her life, a negotiator came. Instead of trying to make the person give up the attempt of killing himself/herself, the negotiator kept saying how stupid this person was and so on.... I bet the person would rather jump off the building immediately because he/she had enough bullshit from this negotiator.

**** How lucky that I no longer have such kinda person as a bf or even a friend...... My cortisol is back to a normal level and I'm free of any psychological stress and depression....

Seriously, the joy & happiness, and the sadness and depression of a person is closely related with the words he or she receives from others.  I think it's always much nicer to give others more encouraging words.  You may help analyse the case with your friends and what can be done better, but try avoid using harsh words because it might only make the situation even worse.

Eat, sik, comer, mangiare!!

I have got many topics which I wanna talk about these days, so my Yblog is technically speaking back to a very busy status

I have bought some books lately, and among them is a book which talks about Portuguese food.  When I received the parcel the day before and opened it and saw this book, honestly, I was pretty disappointed.  Why?

When I first saw this book being sold on the internet, I was really thrilled by its title - How to Eat Out in Portugal & Brazil! Wow, that sounds a perfect book for me (because it talks about food PLUS it talks about Portugal ).  I rarely see books which talks about Portuguese food (at least written in English and sold in HK) so when I saw it on the internet, I immediately wanted to buy it. Initially, I thought this book would be a rather big one (I was given this false impression by the website), plus this book is NOT inexpensive!!

Let's take a look at my newly bought book...

就咁睇張相好難估計我本新書有幾大, 是嗎?  我收到書先發現, 本書係pocket size, 好細本, 而且不特只, 裡面一張食物嘅相片都冇架, 好傷心呀!!!

It's hard to tell from the picture the actual size of the book, right?  When I opened the parcel and saw the book, I found out that it's indeed a pocket-sized book only; and also, there's not even one single picture of any Portuguese dish or pastry.  I am so so so unhappy!!!

大約兩年前我買左一半都係講歐洲美食嘅書, 不過本書只係講意大利、法國和西班牙美食, 冇葡萄牙。呢本書只係承惠HK$58!!!  平到震之餘仲圖文並茂介紹好多從appetitzers, 到first dish, second dish, ..... desserts, 乜都有!  我去意大利旅行時都有帶在身。

I've bought a book on eating European dishes, but that only includes food of Italy, France and Spain. Nothing about Portuguese food.  The book costs only HK$58!!  Not only is it so cheap, but also it describes many dishes (each dish with pictures, ingredients etc).  I even took this book with me to Italy.

所以我初頭都期望 How to Eat Out in Portugal & Brazil都係類似嘅書, 可惜就唔係, 不過算啦, 在網上買書就係有呢種風險, 本書雖然唔係我最初預期嘅內容, 但呢本書就每一種菜嘅名都會教點讀, 有乜材料, 本書反而似一本phrase book + dictiionary多d。

That's why when I first ordered How to Eat Out in Portugal & Brazil, I also expected it to be like the first book I have, but sadly it isn't quite the same.  That's ok, that's the risk of ordering books online.  While it isn't quite what I expected, it teaches you how to read the name of the dishes in Portuguese, and it tells you the ingredients of the dishes. I would say it's more a phrase book + dictionary, than a book about Portuguese cuisines.
